We are to witness a generation that thinks some words have numbers in them, so to expect literacy is to expect a little too much! I would go for a duel core, because I demand satisfaction [throws down glove]...I challenge you to a duel!

Well, I ended up going for the "kwad coar" on the basis that it may be slightly more future proof - and I can handle my single threaded apps taking longer if I can still use the PC to be doing something else at the same time - so I can effectively run more single threaded apps at once (and then go make tea!)
It is a fairly difficult choice to make in the end though, especially as none of the "business PCs" come with i7s yet (that's kind of what I'd hoped to be able to pick up, but was (unjustifiably) outside our budget. Ho hum, I'm sure this will do what I want (I have a habit of wanting PCs which significantly outspec what I actually need anyway!)
Cheers for the replies (and entertainment!)
Paul

If it is a works machine, overclocking is probably not on the cards.
If it is mainly office applications and single threaded stuff, then a dual core is probably enough. If you are doing a lot of labview modelling, then the quad core might be worth considering...

Shouldn't that be gauntlet? /pedant (for now...) By the way, I'd avoid the duel cores - they spend too much time fighting each other
