I fancy treating myself to a new toy. My laptop is still pretty capable, my HTPC although getting old still does all I ask of it, I'm not going to get a Xbox One until it's cheaper, my TV doesn't need to be any bigger and apart from needing some new headphones, I'm pretty much sorted. No, this is purely decadent.

Drawing is one of the things I want to do more of - and maybe preserve the sketches and doodles I do on a day to day basis in some way. I was thinking of an Inkling when it first came out - but it's appeal has waned - and lately I've really enjoyed playing with (Autodesk) Sketchbook - so was leaning toward a pointer device (although I've never used a stylus) and there's the "loss" of mobility - though I seldom take my laptop anywhere - so was wondering if there was a tablet solution, that works standalone and a periperhal to other computers - that would play nice with Sketchbook, OneNote, etc.

Any thoughts?

I think that there are drawing apps for most tablets and probably very reasonable as well. Though if you do not go anywhere to draw why not treat yourself to a Cintiq? You could plug it into your computer and draw on that.

I've been looking at the 13HD. It's quite sexy.

It looks pretty much like the bigger version but in a smaller cheaper package. The reviews look quite good.

Cintiq was my first thought as well, although I went with a Windows 8 tablet with integrated Wacom stylus in the end. I can use it as a portable tablet, or plug it into a keyboard dock to use it as a notebook or into a desk stand, with external monitor, keyboard and mouse for full on work. It is only an Atom version, but it is darned good, I would think a Core I based tablet would be ace.

iPad + Adonit Touch stylus + one of the better drawing apps (ProCreate, Autodesk's Sketchbook Pro). This will set you back less than a Cintiq will cost you. OK, you'd won't be able to use it in your co outer as a peripheral, but I am finding this a far better way for drawing that the disconnect that a graphics tablet on a co outer will give you.

I think there's an app for that. There certainly is for Android, although finding a combination that works properly with pressure sensitivity might be a trick.

What puts me off, compared to either a proper graphics tablet or a Windows / Android tablet with Wacom digitizer is that the iPad stylus is a thick rubber nipple, which isn't very accurate and it doesn't support pressure sensitivity, the Windows and Android devices support pressure sensitivity, with 1024 different levels.

The stylus is also fine enough that you can be very accurate and write / draw "properly" on the screen. After using the Wacom digitizer, the iPad is a very disappointing experience.

The Adonit stylus is not a rubber nipple. It's a small transparent disc, and the drawing experience is more akin to using a biro. The Adonit Touch range does pressure sensitivity - the new model uses Bluetooth 4 to give you palm rejection.

Here's something I drew on my iPad with a Jot Touch:

Actually, there are a few styluses for the iPad that don't use the rubber nipple approach.

Did you ever read my article here on Styluses? I mentioned the Adonit Jot, which uses the same plastic disc, but doesn't do pressure,

A decent iPad could make up much of the cost of the Cintiq 13HD, though it would also be a retina screen, you could use a 3G version for ultra portability and you could sync via iCloud as well. Then you have the option of using all the other apps that are available for the iPad.

Well my housemate has a collection of work ipads, I think he's on his 3rd now, so I might be able to snap one up from him - that Jot stylus certainly looks more capable, and geared toward, the kind of (technical) drawing I do.... £85 for a "pen" though... WOW. Would. Not. Want. To. Lose. That!

That would be a lot cheaper to try out. If you got the pen and found out that it does not work so well then all you have lost is £85 for the pen, which you could return quickly if bought online and get a refund. Then you could still get the Cintiq if that is really what you want.

FYI the new Jot Touch 4 uses Bluetooth 4 that iPads 3 & 4 support. The previous Jot Touch will work with iPad 2.

Palm rejection means you can rest your hand in the screen and it won't get detected as a touch event. The Jot Touch I have is the older variety, and not having palm rejection is an annoyance. Sadly, Apple won't allow apps to ignore touch events, and this feature only seems possible with BlueTooth 4.

I Starter reading your article, but as I didn't have a tablet, I didn't read it all the way through.

Glad to hear things are improving.
