Apple Testing Screens for a Larger iPhone and a 13-Inch iPad

Quote:
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple and its suppliers are testing larger screens for both the iPhone and iPad:
In recent months, Apple has asked for prototype smartphone screens larger than 4 inches and has also asked for screen designs for a new tablet device measuring slightly less than 13 inches diagonally, they said. The current iPhone 5 has a four-inch screen, while the iPad has a 9.7-inch screen. The iPad Mini, a stripped-down version of its tablet computer, has a 7.9-inch screen.
Reports of larger screen sizes for Apple's iPhone model are not new. Multiple reports have already suggested that Apple has been experimenting with screen sizes as large as 5.7" for the iPhone.

However, only one previous rumor, which we classified as "sketchy" emerged in May that pinpointed a 12.9" size for a future iPad.
The larger iPad, which the site apparently in all seriousness says would be called "iPad Maxi", would launch in the first half of 2014 and be intended to target the ultrabook market as well as increase utility for digital textbooks.
While we dismissed that rumor before, the Wall Street Journal's sources apparently confirm the testing of this large almost 13" screen size. The newspaper does explain that these new designs may never make it to market.

Meanwhile, they say the new 2013 iPad will be ramping up later this month. This year's iPad will use the same 9.7" screen, but with a lighter and thinner display structure.

What do people think about bigger iPad screens?

Very possibly. I like my iPhone 5 screen size. I think that larger screens are overkill, especially on phones. A larger tablet might be handy for some. Mine is used as a replacement to the TV much of the time so might be useful but not convinced that three sizes are required. The mini is likely to be too small for many uses.

I agree that it's probably a load of bollocks, but FWIW I'd be all over a bigger iPad - I find the mini great to have with me, but just too small sometimes, and I'm leery of carrying the bigger iPad around as it has all my accounts etc... on it; a ~13" iPad just for home use would be great, for me. Scary thought; if it's true, I may have bought my last laptop 3 years ago :o

As an aside...

Jeez, I thought we got all the 'maxi pad' jokes out of the way three years ago. I do wish Americans would either a/ grow up, or b/ be self-aware enough to realise that what their peurile minds are sniggering at is meaningless outside their shores, as the rest of the world doesn't have that brand of sanitary product.

Does the iPad still have a huge bezel?

Surely they could just fit a 13" screen into the current size device?

IIRC the 'full fat' iPad does, the mini doesn't. They claim it's a design issue - if you hold a device in a 'flat grip' with two hands (big iPad) they need the bezel to stop accidental touches being registered, whereas with the little iPad you can hold it with one hand so it's less of a problem.

They could probably code up something to detect & ignore accidental taps (they do on the touchpads on Macbooks) but I suspect someone else probably has a patent on it...

You definitely need a big bezel. While you could get away with a smaller bezel it would take some getting used to.
