I would opt for the second S2440L because of the extra screen size, better contrast ratio, slightly faster, better colour support though slightly dimmer and without the extra USB out ports. The pixel pitch is larger because of the screen size.

The 2nd as it has HDMI connection however it is not height adjustable whereas the 1st one is.

The Ultrasharp is an IPS display which generally gives much better colour and viewing angles. It's the more professional monitor, equivalent to an Apple Cinema display which I heard use the same panel. It's also cheaper.

The disadvantage is the lack of HDMI and slightly smaller size, which may be an issue if you want to use it as a TV.

(Architectural) workstation use.

The query was really driven by the fact that I was trying to spec. match workstations we have (that come with the U) over one I could spec. (both from Dell). My aim was to focus on the machine spec. first, and align the monitors like-for-like so they didn't influence the difference in the cost. Given they're both 1920x1080 units, there's no major win for application/desktop screen real estate - but since I was able to outclass the (current) machines with some £800 to spare, the U3014's 2560 x 1600 actually becomes viable! 8-)

Either way, I've opted to keep schtum for the moment - it's only my first week and I'm still getting my feet under the table...

Get the 2560x1600s if you can, obviously.

Don't tempt me! I've been thinking of treating myself - although the 24" I have as a second monitor seldom gets fired up.

The most important components on a computer are the display, keyboard and mouse. You spend all day looking at the screen and interacting with the PC, if those components are sub-par, you can throw the rest in the bin.

The u2713 monitors are 2560x1440 and I thoroughly recommend them

Just got my cashback so mine worked out about 310 from Dell

In fact for the price you could get 2 2713H monitors for the price of a U30 if you shopped around.

You would need a beefy graphics card though, My AMD 6950 goes to 3d clock speeds on 2560x1440 and is noisy running it with a 22" 1920x1080 montior at the same time

Also if you get a really good screen it could be used on the replacement computer as well. So in that case it will be good value.

The Dell. Every day of the week.

I have the 23 and whilst the display is wonderful for Photoshop, general work, but also gaming and video - the stand is a godsend. I don't believe anybody makes a better monitor stand than Dell, although I could be wrong.

Yes, but which of the Dell's in the OP is the question. ;)

The U - not even a contest.

  • Has an Ultrasharp panel - rather than the standard one that the S has
  • Has the very nice, fully-adjustable Dell stand.
  • HDCP definitely available on the DVI port - so it can be on an encrypted data path
  • Has a DisplayPort connector - which IMO is preferable to and much more useful than HDMI
  • Can be used as a USB2 4-port Hub
