Post subject:  What core is my P4?

I have two P4 machines in front of me.

How do I find out what core the P4 is? I.e. Prescott/Northwood and what have you. Preferably a software solution, I don't really want to take the HSF off and take a peek.

Ta. :)

CPU-Z for Windows?

Not sure what you'd want under Linux, perhaps a similar command to the Solaris `prtdiag`.

In Windows, on the properties for My Computer, it should give the processor name, type and speed.

Given the processor name / designation (E2160, T9400 etc.) you should be able to search the 'net and find out.

Maybe narrow it down with known details such as core speed and hyperthreaded/non-hyperthreaded. You'll probably get some decent info in to BIOS like bus speed and if you're lucky the Intel part number. Charts of all the P4's here:

Darn, been checking the machines here... It is only Pentium Ds and Core chips which display their processor Id in the My Computer Properties dialog. The Pentium 4s just display "Pentium(R) 4" :?

As somebody mentioned, I think CPU-Z will work, and is on most Dennis mags' cover discs :)

And that's what inevitably happens when you start thinking after you click 'submit' ;)

Ah yes, thanks for the CPU-Z suggestions. CPU-Z tells me that they're P4 630s with 90nm Prescott 2M cores and a clock speed of 3000MHz, with HyperThreading.
