Post subject:  Video and voice over internal network

Hi

I'm trying to set up a system which will allow users at a remote site to look vehicles (read the number plate) and talk to the mechanics.

I've been looking at IP cameras and also the possibility of using something like Skype over a local network but on 2 different subnets. Has anyone got any advice suggestions. I'm concerned that any system will be bandwidth hungry.

Like the new site by the way much better than PCpro's
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forums, glad you like them.

Streaming video & audio can be bandwidth intensive depending on the codecs used.
Most IP cameras also do audio as well (but only one way). Skype or msn would work with a webcam but it'd go out via the internet.

What kit do you have on site at the moment?
Are the 2 subnets connected via a router or VPN over the internet?

Provided the two PCs can ping each other, then you might consider Netmeeting. It's seriously old, but you still get it with Windows and you can connect by IP address.

Press Start - Run and type conf

It does video and speech, but yes; video can be quite bandwidth hungry. You can change the settings according to your requirements.

What's the available bandwidth between the two subnets?

Hi again thanks for your prompt replies.

The 2 Subnets are connected via routers over a Les 2 Fibre link, which I believe is 2Mbs. However this is already carrying, telephony and Data so I don't know what's actually available for use. I may have to put an extra ADSL link in as well
