Post VPN
Hi,

Whats the best way of making a VPN? Me and a friend are trying to use Hamachi to play Garry's Mod over, and it's sh*t slow.

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

The best way in over a leased line with Cisco hardware but that's not really what you wanted to hear.

Hamachi works well but your router might be able to do one.
Although depending on your upload spead of your ADSL you might be stuck with what you've got.

Cheers again Sas,

I have a Netgear DG834, and this says something about VPN in the settings. But I can't get it to work right for the life of me.

Hamachi works, but I only have to get a message over MSN or something and it lags like hell, sometimes with ping times bing 1 second!. And I have the faster connection of us two! (10mb ADSL line)

I'm beginning to think my router is causing it though ie. the firewall blocking it. I've forwarded ports, but that made no difference. And after reading round the web it seems that people have had some success with Gmod on Hamachi.

I'm stumped. :/

10Mb broadband only has a 1Mb upload maximum. Add the vpn overhead and you won't get the fastest connection using home broadband.

The VPN on the Netgear works well. We use them for remote workers and run voice over them no problem.

The first thing to make sure is that you & your mate are on different subnets. If you're on 192.168.0.X then he must be on something else like 192.168.1.X otherwise the router can't tell what's where.

Then, on your router create a new VPN using the wizard and selecting "This VPN tunnel will connect to: A remote VPN client (single PC)"

Then get him to create a new VPN network connection to your external IP address. He can do this by clicking "Create a new connection" in network tasks, or if he's got a VPN router like yours then he could do it on that.

Cheers JJW,

We're in different parts of the country! He's in Stevenage and I'm in Barnsley, so I think we're on different subnets :P

So all I do is config it like that and tell him to connect to my IP? Sweet!

No, you need to make sure that the two of you have your LANs on different subnets.

Bloody hell, 2 weeks on the job and he's right
Us seasoned techs don't stand a chance.
If you're both using standard routers, the chance is you're both on the same (standard) class C subnet.

Well, fail. :)

I made a VPN on my side, only to find out his router doesnt support it. :(. So he tried to connect windows side, which failed too.

But it looks like we've fixed Hamachi. It was trying to Upnp some ports which thr router blocked. So we changed our ranges and it seems to work fine.
