Not sure whether it's since the original "10.8.5 Update", or the "10.8.5 Supplementary Update", but I now seem to have a visible file called "mach_kernel" file at the root level of my Macbook Pro hard drive.

I do know that this file should exist on all OS X systems, but it's usually kept invisible - and mine was until these latest updates - obviously, I'm not going to do anything daft like delete it or move it, but some less-technical users could easily do that without realising that it will likely break the system.

Anyone else on 10.8.5 - either the original update or the Supplementary Update (1.0) - and have noticed this? I have a brand new iMac at work, already on 10.8.5 when I started last week, which also has this usually-invisible file, visible!

Seems it was, indeed, the 10.8.5 Supplementary Update that caused this...

And check the comments on here...

I'm not buggering about with Terminal, so let's hope Apple release a Supplementary Update to the Supplementary Update, presumably version 1.1!!

What's going on with Apple's quality control?

Ooer. Never noticed that before, but then I rarely head into the root level these days.

Bad Apple.

I see it too. Yikes!

Typing this in Terminal does indeed hide the file again

Code:
sudo chflags hidden /mach_kernel

Same here but I will wait and see if the next update will fix it.

With Mavericks nearly due, the chances are that 10.8.5 will be the last update to Mountain Lion, apart from security updates.

I was planning on upgrading to Mavericks so it hopefully will be fixed in that release. Only a week or so before we get details of that.

Yup, shows up at the top level of my system disk as well (10.8.5 with supplemental update).
Doh! Mind you, I suspect that if I hadn't read this thread I would probably never have noticed it.

Yeah same here - I wouldn't have spotted if it you hadn't mentioned it.

Ah, you probably just delete it. ;)
