Does anybody NOT use one?
Just pulled my Zagg Shield off after a year as I was finding Swype less than accurate at speed. Things have improved and my screen looks better (obviously, I guess). Still have a heavy duty case, but just thinking that my phone is big enough to warrant its own pocket in whatever clothing I place it, so scratching with keys etc. just doesn't happen. I have Gorilla glass. And a drop in the case is no issue as I've done that before. So, am I missing something, or is another £15 on the latest and greatest a waste of money?

I used to have one for my iPhone 4S. Got rid of it after a while though.
Now for my iPhone 5 I don't have a case or anything. Never dropped or scratched a phone that I have ever had so I don't bother now.

I bought one for my IPhone 3GS, but got rid of it after a week or so. Since then I've never bothered with another one.
The iPhone is still going strong 4 years later and my htc and Samsung Galaxy have never had one and apart from some fine scratches visible if you really look for them, they still look fine. I've also not used cases for my last couple of smartphones.

I have to confess I bought a number of cases for the iPhone when it initially arrived. I never bothered with screen protectors. Though it gets tough to get the phone out of some cases. Though for the last few months I have not bothered with any cases. I keep the phone in a pocket on its own and it is still in immaculate condition.

Through my own experience and that of others I know who have used smartphones, it really does entirely depend on how careful you are with it. I know that sounds a ridiculous statement, but I know people that have just thrown the phones in their bags with all sorts of other items and the screen protector has been necessary, I try to avoid doing this and so far I've not needed any sort of screen protection on my iPhones.
If you think you might need one, get one. If it's on and not needed, great. If you don't have one on and find you do need one, well it's likely too late as the damage would be done.

You are right. It depends significantly on who you are. I did not know at first but I have not dropped it once yet. I could have avoided buying the cases, but did not know if the phone was a scratch magnet. I know one person with a smashed Samsung screen. It is only the clear screen and not the actually electronics so it is still operable. He dropped it in a protective case.

I've got an easily replaceable stick-on job because my Xperia's super-reflective - I've never smashed or even scraped a screen significantly yet.

I have had iphones for years without screen protectors and there were almost no scratches on the screen. So I think protectors are a waste of money. Although I have damage to the aluminium back from my iphone 5, and since the colour under the black layer is silver it's very visible. So I'm using a cover now
