It would be much cheaper if they didn't pay Apple to put in so much RAM.

50p of metallic red paint adds 38000 plus to the price?

50p of metallic red paint and being the only one ever adds 38,000 to the price.

It's actually a completely different enclosure because aren't the standard ones glass?
This is aluminium, so it's a little bit more than just a coat of paint.
Still, that's quite a bit of markup.
I hope the successful bidder gets good use from it.

The new Mac Pro has an aluminium case as well; the video from the last Event showed it in manufacture.

I quite like it in red. I don't like the price, obviously.

I didn't watch it - either the video or the show.
Thanks for clarifying for me.

TBH I only watched the Macbook Pro and Mac Pro announcements. The manufacturing process for the new Mac Pros did look quite impressive.

Very highly automated as well.

Very few mass product lines these days aren't highly automated.

With something as intricate as the new Mac Pro I am surprised it is not almost entirely automated. It looks like humans are primarily there as quality control.

The interesting thing is that while Apple kit might be expensive it does hold its value. My iPad 2 is still worth a few hundred on the secondhand market. Though maybe less because I had it engraved.

Is the Mac Pro aluminium shell just painted, or is the same process they use to colour iPods? Because that's pretty hard wearing. Not that Mac pro particularly needs to be hard wearing, now I come to think about it.

I hope it isn't the coating they are using on the band on iPhone 5/5s phones. That chips away within days...

We have 4 iPhone 5 phones at work and all of them have chipped and flaked paint on the metal band. Why don't they anodize it?
