Post subject:  Migrating e-mail provider
I've found myself in a situation where somebody wants to host their website and e-mail with me.

The website is straight forward, and I know I can do that. But e-mail ... well I'm just not sure basically.

There is just one e-mail account, and it is hosted with the current webhost. When the domain comes over, the e-mail will be handled by Google apps just like all the other domains I look after.

The current host provides access to these e-mails with POP3 and IMAP, so I can download all the e-mails to my machine here. But then how do I get them into the new Google account?

Any help would be appreciated! :?

Okay, so I just found the GMail fetcher. When do you reckon this should be run?

I'm thinking that after I've changed the DNS, and I can see e-mails coming into the new Google account I should run the Mail fetcher and then be done with the old account, right?

I just really can't afford for anything to get lost lol

You could download the mail, link to google mail from mail or Outlook via imap then drop the old mails in to the local copy (which will sync with the server)

The person is using web-based e-mail at the moment, and is going to continue to use it. They know that they'll have to use the google interface.

I'm going to go ahead and do this soon, just waiting for a busy period of theirs to finish (hopefully just a week or two). :)

Who's the current provider?

Surely you can just host the mail in your reseller account.

I don't have a reseller account. But I could host it with my hosting provider.

To be honest though, nobody does mail better than Google.

Apart from them reading your email they're OK.

Although I prefer Exchange

I can understand people being concerned by that, but it doesn't bother me.

Most people I speak to seem to think, like I do, that it's fair. A bit of give and take lol. I get reliable, free e-mail with all the storage I could ever use and more. They get to feed some subtle adverts to me.

I assume they don't do it to customers of their business service they're pushing?
