Just noticed I had 6GB of available space left on my MBA.

I bought WhatSize from the AppStore (I have tried free alternatives but they're all poo).

Anyway, I noticed a couple of things straight away after it finished scanning.

1. I had 40GB of downloaded apps in iTunes.
2. I had about 20GB of device backups in iTunes (all from the same device).
3. I had about 10GB of derived data folders in Xcode (it's used as a cached when building projects).
4. I had a load of crud from apps I had installed not through the app store (World of Warcraft was among them) anyway, I had a few GBs of these hanging around after uninstalling them.

Deleted them all.

Cleared almost 80GB of space. Almost a third of the disk size.

If you used an app like Appcleaner it would also have found any of the other associated files and eliminated them as well. Though be careful when you connect your iOS device as it will probably reload them from the device.

Yeah, I think I've stopped it from re loading them now.

I think if you back up to iCloud that it does not download.

Is it pretty safe to delete old device back ups and app?? I've got loads too, and would free up space for me... but wasn't relishing the task of going through iTunes selecting/searching for ones I could delete...

If you keep an eye on the trash bin, every time you upgrade an app the old version is deleted. Just keep emptying the bin and it will free up the space.
