Why, since upgrading the OS to 10.9, do my connected external FW 800 hard drives not spin down once I've ejected them?
Any one help out on this please?

Do they spin down if you physically unplug the FW?

Yes. These don't have an external PSU. I've done a bit of digging and it appears that 10.9 handles the FW bus differently to other versions of Mac OS X, in that it keeps the power to the bus, even when the drive has been ejected. I don't like just unplugging the drive while the disk is spinning. Makes me nervous I'll lose data. Mark

Drives since the late 80s have auto parking heads, so as long as you don't shame them violently as you unplug them, it should be safe to do so, once OS X has 'ejected' them.
