Wow how much space does junkware take up?

There's only been a couple of times I've come close to filling my 16GB phone. Just takes a little management. So, if I'm going to London with work, I'll maybe chuck on a movie and couple of TV shows for the train. Apps & Photos take up by far the lions share of my phone. Getting my entire music collection on the phone would be entirely pointless; I'd need a 64GB phone and then I'd have no space for apps or photos.

My iPhone is 64 Gb but it is half full. Mostly lots of apps. I could get delete quite a few but occasionally I would try out an app but not delete it afterwards. The problems is that managing them within iTunes but not including installing them is impossible. I want to have folders for all my apps for London so I could install them in one go but I have to do them individually and I would need to know what apps to install.

I dont know how mine has 9.5Gb for apps, music et al. Though I do have the option of putting in a sd card if I need any extra space.

I'd imagine there's some variation between carriers and between carrier-supplied and 'unbadged' phones. But having 9.5Gb of the phone's internal storage available to you doesn't really strike me as much better than having 8.5 when you've paid for 16. It would still make your phone the worst performer in the group.

the amount of available storage from the box for something like the S4 isnt a deal breaker because you can get extra storage. Unlike the nexus or the iphone at a better cost ration. Of course I could just get rid of the added samsung apps or install a vanilla version of android and have ~12.5Gb free. But as ive still got 1.9Gb free even with the hobbit on it. Its not a big issue, if its the price of having the freedom to be able to expand by 64Gb, i'll gladly accept it.

My iPhone had 32GB, the htc Mozart that replaced it 16Gb, the Sensation that replaced that had 2GB plus an 8GB SD card and the S3 has 16GB. I never had problems with lack of storage space.

I had a problem with my old HTC Desire. Yes you could fit what ever size SD you wanted, but some apps couldn't be moved to the SD card and there was only 1GB of internal storage. It got to the point where I couldn't down load new apps as there was no internal space to install them to first. That's why I went for a high internal capacity (64GB) with my current phone. I'll never fill all that.

I wonder if the type of device also matters. I don't have many issues with storage on my Xperia (16GB), but I'm continually having to shuffle stuff around on my iPad mini (16GB). I tend to have things like movies and magazines and what have you on the latter rather than the former.

I have a 32GB iphone - that gives Available 28.3 GB and have 19.6GB free However I also have a 32 GB Nexus 10 with only 2.1 GB free
The reason is that I watch movies and play games etc on the Nexus and only listen to a a bit of music / Podcasts on the Iphone. I go play the odd gamebut they tend to be simpler (so smaller) ones
I would therefore have no problem getitng a 16GB phone

I have 64Gb iOS devices and the iPad is regularly filled but then I have big games for it so that does explain why it fills so rapidly. While I have hundreds of apps the iPhone apps are smaller but I have a lot more space on the phone.

The S3 with Cyanogenmod is pretty good, but you get a LOT of bundled apps that are pretty big on Sammy phones like the office suite and all their rubbish video/music systems It's the hardware I have issue with, still can't get music to play back without random pauses on the S3, switched back to my 8 year old iPod classic at work it's that bad! (and yes it still works fine!) That said MicroSD cards are cheap, just wish more would let you use them in their devices, things like the Nexus 5 would be an impulse buy with one as it's a struggle to fit a music collection (or video for holiday) without carrying around a USB OTG cable and some flash drives

Have you tried a different music player, something like Poweramp perhaps?

Doggcatcher (Podcasts) and Audible (audio books) also suffer. I won't be getting another Android phone. Seriously looking at a Lumia 925 vor 1520... Although a 520 would probably be OK for most of my needs.
I dug out my HTC Mozart WP7 phone to use as a Podcast device.
