Afternoon.

I've been wanting a video camera for a while. Just to fart about with, do videos on projects so I can remember what goes where etc. I use a Nokia 6303 at the moment, but the video quality is awful so I've been thinking of getting a SJ4000 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnHDu-oW7_Y) the thing is £60.

Then I remembered, tech is cheap, so I've also been thinking about spending a bit more and just getting a better phone instead.

I like my 6303. Its a strange magical thing that does the following;

Can be dropped onto anything and no die (dropped it 5 or 6 times onto a concrete floor, many times on other surfaces, and once down the stairs. It just keeps working).
The battery last 2 or 3 days with standby and MP3 use. Then it drops a bar and still has 2 days left in it.
Is pretty small/slim.

I like that about my phone. I've seen folks with these massive smart phones with battery extenders on so they last a day on standby (met a chap with one of those massive 'not really a phone, not really a tablet' things with a massive wart backup battery on it), I don't want that.

Also wouldn't mind GPS if any low end phones have that. I have an amazing ability to get lost, so it would mean I wouldn't have to buy a TomTom or anything of that nature as well.

Any (cheapish) phones cover that? Half decent camera (720 would be nice, but decent bit-rate/quality), plays MP3, maybe GPS, and can do a day (15hoursish) on a charge with general farting about (mp3 and camera use. I have no social life. So I never phone people. My current phone bill is around £20 ... every 2-3years)

Ta for any info.

Being honest, Adam, I can't think of a cheap phone with a decent camera, but I wouldn't buy one anyway, because...

1. You like the phone you've got so why replace it?
2. You can get a decent compact camera for not a lot these days.

Here's an example: Nikon Coolpix l29

If you do want a new phone, this one, Nokia Lumia 520 seems OK, but I haven't used it so I don't know...

Well dang, the Lumia is sounding pretty good. I shall have to do some youtube based research for video quality.

I got myself a Lumia 625 a couple of months back. It's easily the best phone I've ever had.

For:
  • Nice big screen
  • Camera is pretty good
  • Can take a 64GB microSD card
  • Battery lasts a few days if you keep 3G, Wi-fi and GPS turned off until you need them
  • Easy to use with my massive cock-fingers
  • Cost the square-root of cock-all
  • Great build-quality
  • Runs Windows Phone 8 Black. I find Android and iOS childish and utterly unusable

Against:
  • Not that you'd notice but the screen resolution isn't great
  • Side-buttons are far too easy to press which means...
  • ... Phone is impossible to hold without a rubber case
  • USB socket is at the bottom while the headphone socket is at the top. This is retarded.
  • The app store isn't very large. This might be a problem for some people

Still not sure how the GPS works, does it use phone paid data, or is it like a car GPS thing? You just buy it and it works.

Annoyingly, I almost had enough. Then decided to sort the patio out for my mum instead. Waited this long, I can wait longer.

GPS is GPS, works like a normal car or handheld GPS system.

The Nokia Here maps are downloaded and stored locally. Generally I find them better than Google Maps or the free Navigon apps that I get from T-Mobile on my phones.

My work phone is a Lumia 520.

I'm an android man personally, but I certainly think the 520 can do quite a lot, reasonably well, for very little money. The UI is easy to use and it offers everything that most people want from a phone without getting the latest from the big 2.

The new replacement Lumia 630 is now available, including Windows Phone 8.1. The 520 should get it as well in the next couple of months.
