Having said elsewhere I got a problem with the new ubuntu

My Asus built 3870x2 1gig is not supported at the moment

having said that ALL ati 3*** series of cards are not supported

The question is my card under hardy and worked
and had no problems

If i raid the Hardy repositories and download that driver WILL IT WORK?

From what I gather, they used a custom Catalyst driver & control centre in Hardy to get the card to work. I guess it is a case of waiting for a custom Catalyst to be written for Jaunty before it'll work. May be worth reinstalling Hardy until the issue has been resolved.

You could try adding a hardy repository, or enabling the "backports" option in "Software Sources" and seeing what comes out. Do you have a working desktop now, but with no effects or 3d support?
