Post subject:  MBR Error 1 = the first signs of?
As above really, forced to restart my computer last night and got this in POST. :?

I just managed to get into windows this morning by using F8 to select the OS HD manually (it's set as the boot HD in BIOS but repeated restarts/shutdowns last night didn't seem to do anything)

Google pulls up lots of forum queries, but mostly all talking about Acronis-related issues, and since I'm not running Acronis (nor had been doing any kind of tweaking of late) - I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light? Am I looking at a new HD? (it's pretty old, about 4-5 years) :x

Most likely your HDD is on the way out. Can't be 100% sure, but sounds exactly like it.

Have you tried the fixmbr command?

Thankfully all my beloved data resides on other drives (which I have removed from the machine for now) - and I'm a good way through my "to-DVD" backing up already...

Oh well, all is not lost - at least this'll give me another chance to consider moving onto XP finally. That or I'll just reinstall 2K on a new HD. :lol:

No - I will only be buying a diddy HD for me OS. I might even consider an SSD.

I'm not trialing anything.

I never turn my computer off anyway - so I'm just keeping cpu loads down to a minimum whilst I wrap up the last of my backups then I may have a fiddle on the weekend

And anyway, I've no money this month so I'm going to risk resuming use-as-usual and force it to die before I buy anything.
