Post subject:  VPN for home router software?
Hi

Not sure whether this topic is a hardware/software issue, but is there any VPN software that might extend to the router settings, so the whole network can be changed? By this I mean so I can "pretend" to be in the US and make use of US Netflix on my account on my Smart TV? I can do it by using VPN on the Mac and plugging it into the TV, but just wondered if any Mac apps let you control more, not just the 'device' the software sits on???

I presume the TV will have it's own IP address, so maybe I need to be able to change that?!

Any ideas/suggestions would be welcome!

Not entirely sure what you mean, but I suspect the answer is 'hmmm... possibly?'.

You mean (as far as I can tell) your router connects to a VPN server (say in the US) so therefore traffic from any device connected to the internal network in your house appears to come from the US?

The only kit I've heard that can do that kind of trick 'out of the box' is enterprise routing kit (CISCO etc) that is used for say connecting bank branches together securely. I've never seen a 'domestic' router with that built in, although they could exist. You maybe could do it if you kept your standard ISP router as it was then had one single box plugged into that running the VPN client and then you routed all your internal traffic through that one box as a gateway. it'd need someone who knew what they were doing to set it up but it could work.

Bear in mind this would also be making ALL your traffic go through the VPN supplier and most of them either charge per GB of data you move or have limits as to how much you can move in a month. If that wasn't the case and I was the guy running the VPN service, I'd want to stop you doing this trick, because I'd want you to pay a separate VPN subscription for each device. And there are ways you can do that. So whether it's workable in practice...

Can you not setup the VPN on a computer then share that with the TV?
It seems this would be a much simpler way to achieve your desired results.

Thanks guys

I did think possibly the best alternative was to use a VPN on the iPad and maybe get an AppleTV cheap somewhere and stream instead... just be nice if the TV itself would work via VPN, but don't think I'm tech savvy enough, and as you say, that would mean ALL devices running through it.

Guess until Smart TVs are smart enough to take VPN apps, the stream route might be best! Just hoped there was a simple solution.

I WILL get to watch all the The Walking Dead soon on my set, I"m sure... :)

You can flash a lot of routers with alternative firmware that supports vpn etc.

There's a couple of chrome extensions that do the proxying for you, so you don't need a vpn.
I think the one I've used was called hola

I may just plug the Mac into the TV and use Tunnel Bear for the time being, but I'm tempted to get an Apple TV box and use unblock-us.com to alter the settings and have the Netflix running native with US account on there... could well be worth it!
