Microshaft Outlook is being a pain. I'm setting up some mail rules (don't get me started on those - I'm hoping on getting a 3rd party plugin when I can afford it that basically makes Outlook rules work the way you'd expect them to and then adds extra functionality) and I noticed that the Junk e-mail filter isn't there as a rule. I can add stuff to the Junk Mail filter and it doesn't do dick, to put it bluntly. Tried setting the settings to no filter and then putting it back. Tried searches online. No point in submitting stuff to the Junk mail filter if the filter itself isn't in place in rules. (I found this out because I marked something - ostensibly from a facebook app called 'speeddating' - as spam and then went into rules to run the spam filter which... wasn't there....) Does anyone on this forum have a clue what's going on here? |

2007. It's SUPPOSED to be done automatically because the "Junk Email Rule" is SUPPOSED to be automatically in the 'rules' list (trust me - I write a lot of e-mail rules and make a lot of folders). Well now I find that Autoarchive isn't working because, for some reason, inbox seems to already be in an archive folder and I can't move the bloody thing because you're NOT ALLOWED TO MOVE IMPORTANT FOLDERS. Even if Outlook has. Because it's decided that it makes sense. I hate Outlook. It promises great things but never delivers them properly. I think the easiest thing would be to do a repair install except that I got this PC off my old workplace when I left and I don't have the discs. AAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH! |

Yes but I've found that with every version of Outlook up to and including 2007 that it doesn't run the rules properly. An example of this is that when you specify something coming from a specific account it determines that account by e-mail address and not, as you would have thought, by the account being used when that specific email is downloaded. So if you've got an automatic mailer that sends your mail to customer@automaticmailer.com but downloads to your main account then that one will not be filtered even though you specified in the rules put mails from this account into this folder and NOT put rules from this e-mail address into this folder. Also it seems to be intermittent as to how often it follows rules when they're first downloaded (I've sometimes had to apply rules after mail has already been collected in order to properly filter my mail). Of the two problems I have at the moment the first one to appear was the lack of a Junk mail filter in the Rules. I have a feeling that this is because Outlook was set up to run on exchange server and that possibly the Junk e-mail was filtered by exchange server and so the rule was eliminated as it wasn't needed. The other problem came later and I think I know how it happened but not how to fix it. I was Applying new Autoarchive rules to individual folders and then going to File>Archive and clicking on "Archive all folders according to their Autoarchive settings". I think at some point I did that but accidentally kept the setting on "Archive this folder and all other folders". The folder selected at the time being the Inbox folder. So now I have EVERYTHING in the archive folder. Instead of creating a seperate archive folder for inbox it's just PUT INBOX IN AN ARCHIVE FOLDER!!! ![]() Grr. |

Just a thought but have you tried saving inbox and subsequent folders to a separate PST. Hopefully that wouldn't then be in an archive folder. |

To be honest I think the problem lies between keyboard and seat...
As it's not very clear... customer a@b.com sends email to generic@someplace.com, someplace.com then downloads it to person@someplace.com? In that case your rules look like they are wrong. I think you should be setting the rules for the main account and discriminating on who they are addressed to. The junk email filtering is done by the host server, exchange or otherwise... if you have bad filtering it's down to that normally. Autoarchive will have everything in there that is old and follows the autoarchive rules, so if it's set to autoarchive after 1 day you will have a lot in there |

I'm fully aware that I may have caused the problem now I just need some help fixing it. If however you're calling me thick then be aware that I have logged a lot of hours fixing problems for family & friends and am not inexperienced. Insulting me doesn't actually help me solve my dilemma. There are two problems here. 1. My junk e-mail doesn't filter as it used to. 2. I have somehow managed to (or Outlook has somehow managed to) put everything in an archive folder. Any new inbox items will download into the inbox but the inbox still remains inside the archive folder. The autoarchive settings that I have set for each folder for the most part don't autoarchive.
To be fair I don't have any problem setting up new rules I just avoid using the option "through the specified account" because instead of filtering all stuff that goes through that account at the point of download (as one would expect) it instead just filters based on the main 'To' address for that account meaning that any mailshots that don't specifically have my e-mail address in the 'To' account won't filter making this option slightly redundant. Having said this I haven't checked this out since I changed to 2007 so it may just be a 2003 problem.
No. There is some server side Junk filtering - I'm not on exchange server it's a home based computer and I download the mail from 1&1's mail server. They have their own junk filter but Outlook itself has a junk filter that I utilise to catch the stuff that it doesn't. This isn't host side it's part of the program and normally it has it's own rule that you can find in Rules but this seems to dissapear on my system. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HP052429671033.aspx I am not talking about something I imagined I'm talking about something that I HAD on this computer that I HAVE on another computer and that now doesn't exist on this one. I can still label something as junk but without the Junk rule in the rules folder it doesn't filter.
I know how autoarchive normally works. Most stuff is set to autoarchive after a week or a month however somehow my inbox is IN an archive folder. All new mail that downloads to it even if it's one SECOND old goes into the inbox INSIDE that archive folder. I've tried dragging it out but of course you're not allowed to move major folders in Outlook. You've jumped to the conclusion that it's a PEBKAC error but you obviously didn't examine the picture I posted properly. If it were simply a case of it archiving stuff older than a day old then an inbox would be in existence above the level of the archive folder. As it is EVERYTHING is in an archive folder. THE ENTIRE DIRECTORY TREE. Now if this is a simple PEBKAC then it should be easy to reverse so please tell me how. Or you could stop treating me like I was born yesterday.... Sorry this problem is really frustrating me... |

Thanks for the idea. I actually ended up deleting my account and then creating an account with the same details using the new PST. It seems that it's filtering junk correctly as well although there's still no mention of it in the rules which used to be handy (If you've recieved 100 spams from only 3 or 4 different addresses and you've marked 1 of each as junk then running the junk filter in rules is a quick way of clearing all of them - still there's other ways of doing that so no real hassle). The only problem is that I forgot that I had set the server to not delete the mail so I have duplicates of a lot of mail but that's not too much to deal with. I wasn't calling you thick, just that the problem seemed to be on how you were using the software. You slated the software for not working (Microshaft) yet it's down to your own fault so there was no need to blame software for a failure from a user.

I'm glad you know how autoarchive works It's pretty difficult NOT to jump to a conclusion when you give a poor screenshot with very little information on aside from all your folders in your archive and no more information about what is happening, current settings etc. Why don't I give you a line of code from my recent application I developed and you can tell me why it ends up running slowly?
