Post subject:  Wireless Network Drop Out DIR-655

For a couple of years I have had a D-Link DIR-655 happily talking to my HP lappie whenever they come within range. But, I've suddenly had a problem where the lappie will connect for a while on switch on and then suddenly disconnects. Double click on the windows wireless network management, double click on my network, the key is in the box, click connect and I'm connected again -normal 'acquiring network address' icon in the task tray, then on. I've tried disabling the built-in wireless device on the lappie and connecting an external wireless card. Same result. So I'm thinking the problem may be with the router, but I can't find any way of diagnosing it - the router log doesn't tell me anything that seems to help, other than it appears to be disconnecting every 2 minutes or so - I've been sat running ping with a -t switch, when it disconnects reconnect as quickly as I can and then analyse the log to look at the time difference between reconnects.

I'm running Windows XP on the lappie. Laptop card is a D-Link RangeBooster N650, built in wireless is Broadcom chip set. Both using windows wireless configuration not anything bespoke. Router has had no changes to it recently, been running sweet until now!

Any thoughts suggestions and hints gratefully received,

Stone Breaker

Firstly, welcome to the forums!!

Is it just the one machine that uses this router? If not, do the others connect okay???

What security are you using?

I assume you have tried turning it off and on again?

Hi Nick - thanks for the welcome. Another refuge from Dennis!

Only got one wireless device in the house at the moment, so can't try another one.

Using WPA-Personal.

Yes I've turned on and off - (WIsh I've had a pound for each of time I have had to tell people to do that down the phone! 'That's what you IT types always say!' '... and normally it works....!' says I) but I may try leaving it off overnight tonight to see if it's a heating issue. Bit confused as to why it's so easy to re-connect though!

PS - Signal strength where I am at the moment is brilliant - about 3 foot away from the router to try and discount that as a cause!

I'm sorry, the only thing I can think to suggest is right click my computer then left click management, take a look at event viewer and see if you are getting any errors which hold a clue.

I'm sure someone else will be along in the morning though, so don't worry! JJ and SAS in particular tend to be pretty handy, so they'll be able to help you, I'm sure!

Good luck! :P :)

Thanks for the suggestion - nothing of note in there. (Didn't help that I looked in the logs for my desktop, which is what I'm working on, rather than the lappie initially! )

Will see who trips along tomorrow!

One possibility is interference. Do you have neighbours, or have you recently installed other microwave equipment such as a cordless baby monitor? Do any other networks show up? Try changing the channel.

Are you able to try the external wireless device on a different machine? Is there any way you could check with a friend's iPhone, DS or Netbook or something? That might help eliminate the router as the cause of the problem.

You could also try temporarily disabling security. If the connection is more solid, then it's probably a driver issue.

Update the router firmware then change channel.
I had a similar issue when all of a sudden another 20 wireless networks sprung up around my house.

Thanks for your help - sadly, due to life interrupting with fun haven't had a chance to get to grips with it yet. Hopefully will this week and get back to you, but hate to be thought of someone who sucks up knowledge without spitting out thanks!!

OK, maybe it's too early to ring out the bells, but I've updated as suggested and network has held, so far, for 40 minutes with no problem, and there is another wireless network around. So looks good to me - thanks!! :P
