Post subject:  Closing tabs in Safari?

Hello all,

When I want to close the current tab in Safari, I use the publicised Command + W shortcut. The majority of the time, this will close the current tab only, as expected.

However, on some webpages, this shortcut closes all tabs as though I had used the Shift + Command + W shortcut. I have been keeping notes of this and it seems to happen on webpages with a large amount of Flash content, such as YouTube. The strange thing is that I cannot replicate this all of the time, so it's no use trying to show it to somebody!

Has anybody else experienced this issue?

Thanks,

Peter.

Edit: The forums don't like me using fancy symbols, so you'll have to use your imagination, sorry.

*pitches tent in this topic* I'd like to know this too, as it does the same thing on my Mac.

And Firefox for Mac is crap compared to Safari. I wish Netscape Navigator was on the mac :(

At last someone with the same problem! When I spoke to a few of my colleagues about it, they looked at me like I was an idiot :?

I have experienced a similar problem, though not the one you mention specifically.
I have found (again, sites with lots of Flash or JavaScript) that sometimes command+shift+left/right arrow doesn't switch tabs...No idea why or how to fix it...It's only been since Safari 4 though...

The flash seems to take focus away from Safari - all key presses are interpreted by Flash and not passed on to Safari. If that happens, you will need to click outside of the Flash area, then Safari will respond to key presses again. The same started happening with Firefox a while back, but the last patch seems to have fixed the behaviour.

As for the closing all windows, this seems more like a random crash, something on a complex page seems to trip up Safari and it just closes everything and restarts.

Firefox is great on the Mac. I much prefer it to Safari. Safari loads a little quicker, but I find Firefox far better equipped with addons. Safari is 64bit now, which goes in it's favour though.

Firefox doesn't seem to slow the system down as much, especially if there is a lot of Flahs on a page - plus, using FlashBlock on Firefox means I only run the bits of Flash / Java on a page that I really need!

It is especially noticeable on Flash games, the same game on Safari bogs down a lot earlier than on Firefox, when more and more stuff gets thrown at the page. I don't know if it is the way Safari handles Flash or that Firefox is also not showing some animated ads on the page, but there is a marked difference.

I prefer the way Safari works, now, and it is certainly a better performer with a lot of JavaScript, but until it gets a script blocker and a flash blocker, I won't switch fully to it...

On an aesthetic level for sure but I can't imagine there's a web page in existence that a web browser would struggle to load because it's 'only' 32-bit. Plus IE has been 64 bit for a while and it's still awful :D.

A work around is to click on the page before pressing the shortcut keys.

I had the same problem.
