Lo peeps, My dual 1Ghz MDD is, possibly, playing silly buggers with me. It's currently running 9.2 and I'm attempting to install max. RAM of 2GB but it's only recognising 1GB. So, not being a n00b to these situations (I really hope that comment doesn't come back to bite me!) I removed two - of the 4 512mb - sticks and restarted. All was well, so I swapped those two sticks in to the vacant two slots of the machine, just to test if it was the slots at fault, and it booted fine. Does Mac OS 9.2 only recognise 1GB of RAM? If not then does any one have any sensible suggestions on what I can do to get the full 2GB of RAM recognised? I fully intend to upgrade the OS to version X but I just want to make sure the Mac's okay before I do that. Mark |

What happens if you try using just the two sticks of RAM you removed? ie. check all RAM works, as well as all slots. Edd |

Hang on. Surely 2 dead sticks. Otherwise you couldn't get 1GB. I presume that was a typo? |

Have a look at http://lowendmac.com/ppc/mdd-power-mac-g4-dual.html It suggests that “Although the MDD Power Macs support up to 2 GB of RAM, Mac OS 9 is only able to recognize up to 1.5 GB of RAM.” |

I remember a furore kicking up because people’s Macs started to report less RAM than they had fitted. This was because Apple was deciding not to recognise certain kinds of RAM due to (IIRC) stability issues. I don’t remember much more - hopefully others can fill in the gaps. The RAM might be good, but it may not meet Apple’s standards of the time. |
