Come on then, what do you use? Bells and whistles would be nice. I know that a lot of units can run BitTorrent which would be good. What are you guys using, and what units should I avoid? |

A mate has the Thecus N299. It's relatively cheap and it works, but it was a tw@t to set up and is pretty slow transferring data. You cannot use it for torrenting and the manufacturer lied about it's capabilities in the specs. Avoid. |

I use a Netgear Readynas NV+ but it's not exactly a cheap unit. |

I won't mention that we currently "only" have 14 SAS drives in the RAID array then ![]() |

I have a Western Digital Mybook World Edition. It runs Linux on an Arm processor with 32MB ram, and contains 2 IDE drives which can be mirrored. If you "unlock" it, then you can install rTorrent and many other bits. The ethernet port is gigabit, and you can add USB drives and printers. It has a groovy circle of blue lights on the front. Sounds great, doesn't it? Well, I think it's a bit crap. The processor is so painfully slow that data transfer rates are hopeless. The pathetic memory makes it hard to actually run anything. It's incredibly noisy, it runs quite hot and it takes ages to boot up. However, it was given to me as a present so I shouldn't complain. I only switch it on to do backups, so it should last well and it's quiet enough when it's turned off. I'm thinking of building an ITX machine based on the Atom with the nVidia ION chipset, but they're still quite expensive. I really want something low powered I can use as the media centre in addition to NAS and server duties, because otherwise the electric bill just gets out of hand. |

That's the feedback I'm getting from everywhere JJ, that there are options available but they're all so slow that it's not worth the effort. ![]() This isn't the first time I've looked at getting one of these. Every time I've looked before I've decided it best to build an ITX machine and throw a linux distro on it. Unfortunately it's always worked out a little bit too expensive. Hardware should hopefully be a bit cheaper now though, so I'll take another look. ![]()
Good. I wouldn't be interested. |

For a nas box you can get 500MHz ITX boards from fleabay for less than £30 inc RAM. Just need a box, psu & some drives. |

A step up from NAS but HP MediaSmart Server 495 (or 490 with upgraded processor) gives you tones of options since it is W2K3. |
