Hi

I've having problems with a newish pc. If I load up 4 or more pages in IE7, i then can't open any other applications. They start to open then i get the application not responding message. If I then shut down one of the IE7 pages I can stop the app using task manager and then it will start up.

Over open apps will stop responding if I start opening up more than 4 IE7 windows

Pc is a Dell Optiplex 760 Pentium Dual Core e5200 2.5GHz CPU with a 1Gb of ram, running XP sp3 fully patched.

I've checked the usually suspects, virus, malware, rootkits etc.

Any suggestions

Are you running out of available RAM? 1GB is rather low.

Hi Saspro

I don't think so, I have an identical machine running the same setup without problems. Most of the apps aren't memory intensive. e.g. connections to Unix box via a client which only sends screen updates, and a mainframe connection which is just like the old fashion terminal connections.

Also this sort of setup is in use all around the company with Dell machines with much less memory.

Thanks for your comments I appreciated them.

Cheers

Mike

Have you even checked the available memory when the machine does this?

What's the page file size?

What anti-virus software are you using, and is it scanning apps. on execution?

Hi again

if by speedstep you are meaning the power options function the Scheme is set to Home/Office Desk all other settings are disabled.

I've just run Cpu-z and to be honest it doesn't mean a lot to me, are you requesting I post the report here?

Thanks again

Hi Linux-user

Anti Virus is Sophos with "On Access scanning active", Updated every 2 hours via a Sophos enterprise server. I don't believe this is the cause as I'm using it everywhere without problem. Including machines running identical setups without problems

Speedstep is enabled in the BIOS.
It drops your cpu speed when you're not using that much processor time.
Does your speed in cpu-z show as 2500MHz or 1600 (or lower)

Should show as 2500Mhz, looks like it's not coming back up to speed correctly.

I must admit I thought the same thing so I tried finding the speedstep in Dells bios, result its not there. The only other place where it might be is in Intel Management Engine Bios Extension (MEBx), however this is password protected and I have no idea what the password is. I've tried all the usual passwords I can think of, and the Service Tag details, without success. So now I'm totally stuck.

Do you think that the old trick of removing the Cmos battery and shorting out the contacts will work?
