Just a word of warning. I installed Office 2008 on two new machines yesterday and the automatic update listed 12.2.1 as the available update...

The problem is, it needs 12.2.0 first, which requires 12.1.0 to be installed first! A bit of a fail there :(

Currently downloading the other patches directly, but it was frustrating, as it listed the updated, downloaded the updated, listed the update, downloaded the update ad infinitum.

Edit: Seems like a common problem. Tried to uninstall Office 2008, but the uninstaller said that Office is not installed on the machine!

Looks like the Intel only Office 2008 needs Rosetta to install. Trying now.

Edit 2: Nope, that hasn't helped. The registration site doesn't work with Safari, but does with Firefox, so at least I got that far. But the updates are still not seeing an installed copy of Office 2008! :?

Edit 3: Found another hint, that installing in Safe Start mode could help. Trying that now.

Edit 4: Update 12.2.0 is now installing on the laptop... :D

It is fully patched now, but the update process seems to be broken at the moment.

Using the Safe Boot Mode allowed it to install the updates, finally.

Interestingly, I didn't have any problems with my iMac, but 2008 was installed before Snow Leopard, just updated afterwards...

the only problem i have had with office update has been after using monolingual
which requires a reinstall of office after using the program before update will work, but apart from that, no problems …

I upgraded the Mac mini last night. I had to manually download the updates from MS website, start in Safe mode and then apply the patches.

The Rosetta etc. stuff was all a red herring, but at least it is working now.

I am always surprised when updates require a previous update before they can install. Apple are pretty good in offering combo updates. Microsoft really need to offer combo updates wherever possible.

Tell me about it!

I had to upgrade a new laptop from XP to Vista (we ordered Vista/7, it was supplied with XP and a Vista DVD in the box!), I think there were about 150 separate updates in total!

And how many restarts did that involve?

Only 3, much better than XP, I had to re-install an XP machine a few weeks back and I think that was over 20 restarts!
