what is the best type of RAM to go with this:

Asus Rampage II Gene Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express mATX DDR3 Motherboard - getting a 920 to got with it or should I get the next one up?

In the past having brought a Mother Board and RAM only to find out the RAM make is not supported - had this happen twice even through it was the correct speed

So I was thinking of buy the above with the following RAM - any other suggestions would be appreciated

Corsair Dominator 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit

Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Triple Channel Kit

G.Skill Trident 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C9 2000MHz Triple Channel Kit - I thinking this one - it the top speed and same price as the Dominator

also so far the items that I have brought are:

Domino ALC CPU water cooler
160 GB WD Caviar Blue
1TB WB Caviar Black
OCZ 700 watt MOD xStream-pro
Widows vista 64 bit with free upgrade to window7
Nvidea 285
Antec 1200 case

before I forget I would like to very over clock my CPU - hence the water coolier - is there any places to look etc - that you would suggest because I have never done over clocking before - I would like to copy some one else figures

also they is no computer clubs etc in the Portsmouth area and at work there is no computer people as well - even our ICT people do not build there own computers - so I am stuck on my own

Well, the RAM support list for that motherboard is on the Asus website, so you may want to start there. Go for something at 1600mhz to give yourself plenty of headroom.

If you are getting an Antec 1200 case, why are you getting a microATX motherboard when you can fit a full size one quite comfortably?

good question

and not looking at ASUS web site - having a blond moment

until I looked for a review and found one on youtube I did not know that the motherboard is a microATX - I have always used ASUS mother boards and find them the best (never had one fail after 5 or so years of building computers) and this one got all the connections and USBs that I need - my current board I am using 6 sata ports and 6 USB ports and that still not enough

I brought the case in July when I got my 285 graphic card thinking I need more cooling

My last case was a Antec 900 and I could not fit in a COOLER MASTER GeminII into it so thats why I did not go with the 902 - I thought I have the same problem - and the bigger case looks so cool as well

I brought a modular PSU and the 1200 got a motherboard tray but thats not removable even so cable management even with my current PSU is a lot better

Iwould personally go for the dominator:P

The xms 3 stuff is what i have and its real awful to overclock :(

Hi, if you are going for asus rampage you could go with Asus-Rampage-II-Extreme, bit dear but good board and has onboard over clocking buttons.

I have a P6T and it has overclocked my i7 920 to 3.6ghz very easily - just changed one value from 133 to 180 and that was that. Played Arma 2 for hours without problems. Nice board, same price as the Gene, but with more PCI-E and PCI slots.

As for overclocking the RAM, you can buy RAM faster than you need quite cheaply, therefore negating the need to overclock the RAM at all. 1600mhz is more than enough.

If you're going for the 920 then the Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Triple Channel Kit will be fine.
A 200 bclk will give you 4GHz with the RAM at 1600MHz

I would argue against Asus board, their customer service is the worst in the business. Go with Evga, they insist that you send you faulty board back to manufacturer, not to vendor. They even have it written on boxes :shock:

That speaks volumes about their customer service...

Thanks for everyone help and advice

I just brought a:

Intel Core i7 920 "D0 Stepping" 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)

and pressed the wrong button and brought this one:

Asus Rampage II Extreme Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

I am finding it hard now to find some RAM to go with it

To get me going I have brought - KIN-160D3K KINGSTON 3GB 2000MHZ DDR3 which is listed on ASUS web site as compatible with the motherboard but it only come in 3x1 GB sticks - but NovaTec only has 1 set in stock I really need 6GB of RAM

Hope to have it up and running for the week end

Never many problems with asus boards myself, even the way I abused them. Had 2 fail one was bent socket pins and asus still replaced it :)

Had many Asus boards, never had any problems. However I've seen a few MSI boards fail.

If a company has great customer service, it usually means they have a big customer service department to deal with a lot of issues...

I'd imagine the Citroen customer service department is rather a lot bigger than Toyota's or Honda's for example...

I work for Dell and it was normally said it was the worst customer service with the most customers with problems

my 939 and ASUS board still doing fine after all these years

just unpacked and looked at the cooler for the i7 it HUGE!!! makes my 6000x2 look puny
