I've got a 10meg connection at home and it's working perfectly at the moment apart from the fact that I'm getting a 400k d/l result from speedtest.net. This is because one of my housemates is currently watching something on BBC iPlayer and taking 90% of the bandwidth. Is there any way of managing the router so the maximum speed to each device is 5meg? That way if there are 2 people watchin iPlayer they will both have 5meg connections rather than one having 9.5 meg and the other not able to watch anything. Thanks for the help! |

Oh, I've got a Netgear WGR614 v9 router on Virgin Broadband. No special set up as everything is connected to the router wirelessly. |

You'd really need a router that could assign bandwidth to a connection/IP like a Draytek or you could build a proxy server |

I was discussing the second option with a guy at work today. I have an old PC (used to be a gaming PC from about 6 years ago) that would be perfect for sticking linux on and running as a server. Now, time to move to the Open Source board

Why not let it come to you! I am going to do something similar soon, and will probably use Endian community edition http://www.endian.com/en/products/features/release/ Or Clarkconnect (Endian looks like it has better traffic shaping though) http://www.clarkconnect.com/info/gservices.php Or possibly Vyatta (be wary though; this looks like it's only suitable for Cisco / Juniper peeps or those used to running network services from a command line in Linux) http://www.vyatta.org/ All of those are community editions of commercial products. You can do traffic shaping on Ubuntu or Debian if you like, but those guys look like their forums will dig you out of a hole if you get into one. |
