Post subject:  Yet another Windows 7 thread
Scan are selling Win 7 home premium retail for around £67. Is there any real benefit for a home user to go for the pro edition?

As far as I can tell, the answer is no. But I'd like the opinions of my fellow forumites before I open my wallet.

Depends if you want XP Mode or not. I severely doubt you need Pro TBH.

I got Pro because Home Premium will only address 16gig of RAM and Pro does 192gig. Aside from XP mode and domain connectivity, that swung it for me. As it's a retail box and I can install it on any machine I choose, I will likely be using it for a while. 16gig could be old hat in a few years. I've been using XP for around 8yrs. Aside from that it was only £35 more than Home Premium for me, so it made sense. Now that it's loads more money, if I were buying again, I'd probably get Home Premium.

I didn't realise they placed arbitrary limits on the RAM for the x64 version. How crap. Maybe I'll hold off downgrading my Vista Ultimate installation for the time being until there is a need to spend £150 on a few tweaks.

I thought Vista 64 was limited to 128gig though I love to see an normal home user who requires more than 16 gig :shock: :lol:

32-bit Windows restriction to 4GB is also abitrary. The 32-bit server versions can address 16GB... :?

A word of warning though, the XP Mode is designed for businesses, which is why it is witheld for the pro version. It won't work with games, for example, because the virtual machines does not have 3D acceleration.

Thats a good point, although, for the number of times that I use remote desktop connections, I could use the likes of RealVNC, or a free alternative.

Well, if I come across any games that wont run, I may just dual boot or run XP on another machine.

Instead of starting a new thread thought I would use this dormant one

Well I have finally installed Win 7 (professional). I bought it during the pre-register discount and only finally had some time to install it


So far very good. I did have issues with the Mobo (I have an “old” AMD system with a 4400 X2 CPU) so needed to flash the BIOS as I plan to put a bit more memory inot the old girl and wanted to install the 64 bit version. The flashing took all morning as I have a RAID array and the new BIOS caused issues. Thankfully I had done a full Image of the system as was able once I had set all the new BIOS setting was able to get the system up and running again – this was all while still using XP

Not an MS issue and if I had not had a RAID array or flashed the BIOS it would not have been an issue

Installation smoothly although I aborted the Transfer Wizard once when I forget to tell it to ignore the data drive and it was saying 1 day to transfer the music and Prawn :shock: folders

It installed well and picked up all my devices that were connected without any interference from me

I think I will have issues with my PDA – its ancient and runs Win 2003SE and the latest’s version of Sync does not work well with 2003. Still maybe an excuse to get a smart phone
Also the Web Cam is 100 years old so not sure if will find some drivers for that – will see tonight

Overall so far on the MS side it was about as painless as a re-install can be

Question
On the desktop my shortcuts all the the little arrow in their bottom LH corner – on XP I had managed to get ride of that – anyone know how to do that in Win 7

Internet Explorer 9 will need 20GB per tab... :shock: ...just to boost RAM sales ;)

VirtualPC is free, so are other VM solutions. If you have an XP licence there is no reason to get pro except for multiple domains

Pretty much what he said.

You could even use VirtualBox on Home Premium and install Windows whatever on it. Works a treat too; Vbox is a bit faster and more streamlined than VirtualPC IMO.

Although I wouldn't buy 7, I'd ebay a copy of Windows 2000. :D

Yep, the only advantages XP Mode has are that you don't need an XP Pro licence (you can't virtualise XP Home) and that the apps integrate into the Windows 7 menu.
