Hi,

As we all know, virus writers are the absolute scum of the earth. One of these front bums decided to infact my PC with a metric f*ckton of viruses.

I'm now running Win7 on a spare 80gb HDD I had, and I daren't put my 640gb one back in because as soon as I do the new installation gets infected. I need to know how I can access this drive, preferably in Windows, so I can get some pretty important info off. I've tried Linux, but it won't let me copy anything over.

Is there a boot disc or something that I can run to rid the drive of the aforementioned nasties? Or am I knackered and will have to reformat the drive.

Thanks a lot.

Boot Linux & run something like ClamAV? That'll clear the viruses and then you can install Windows.

Have you tried installing Microsoft Security Essentials on the existing installation or even booting into Safe Mode to make life a little easier?

Tried all of these, including ClamAV. All that does is tell you that viruses are there, it doesn't actually remove them.

Avira seems to be making a damn fine job at the mo. Got the hdd plugged into one of those USB-SATA things, and am running Avira AntiVir on it now.

It's found 63 viruses in the space of a hour!

63 Viruses? I'd just back up my data to a CD/DVD and re-install Windows.

+1
I wouldn't trust Avira if you paid me (and they did try paying me)

It's all fixed now.

To avoid confusing people, I was running Windows from a totally different HDD, and all the 640gb one was doing iwas being scanned for virii. It was plugged in using a USB-SATA adaptor.
