Okay, so this is like FAR out for me, to even concider asking someone about a router problem, when I deem myself as highly competent in networking and wireless.

So, God help me.

Okay, I came home yesterday, my dad called.
"Kels, the internet isn't working, it looks like the router is having a fit."

So I go over his house to check; he wasn't wrong.

So thinking it was a simple case of just switching it off for 5 minutes and letting it cool down, I did that.

5 minutes passed, and I put it back on, with no avail. It got piping hot withing the length of 5 minutes, and the 'i' light kept flashing. Orange, flashing orange, green, off, green, off, orange, flashing orange, and so on.

I wen't into the router homepage, after hiting the rest button on the back of this Netgear DG834G, sadly provided by Sky.

PPPoA connection is down. Like. What The FOOK?! All bills are paid up to date.
So I rebooted the router internally.

STILL no luck, After 3 hours of trying things.

I'm seriously contemplating throwing it against the wall, creating a lovely shower of shimmery stuff, then making a nice cup of mellowbirds, with half a sugar and a dash of milk. Resting back into my armchair, and screaming at the fukwits at Sky to replace his router.

Anyone got any ideas?

I think you've answered your own question. The router is getting very hot and it's not connecting... I would contact Sky, explain the problem to them and ask for a new router.

Let us know how you get on.

If I call Sky, I'll have to go through the way for connecting a router in Bangladeshi. Which I already know how to do, like, who dosen't?!

Then they'll say, We will have to send out an Engineer to check the lines. That will cost you £60 *kerching!* Liiiiiiiiiiiike fook.

Then they will say, we cannot help you any furthur I am sorry. *toooooooooooneeeeeeeeeeeee*

Thanks a bunch.

I kinda knew it was that, but I was just looking for some pointers if you lot had any.

Why oh why do people go with these providers? Orange? Talk Talk? Sky? We should all pass the word their beyond useless.

No offence to your dad.

Because they are cheap and reliable. The router has been powered up for about 2 years now, with about 5 hours downtime in all. I think it's done a pretty good job.

Ok, you've hit the reset button and presumably put the Sky login details back into the router?

What's the 'i' light doing at the moment?

Have you replaced the filter that this socket uses, and are there any other filtered sockets around the house?

Yes.

Like I stated above, flashing green, orange, off, flashing orange, off, green, off, green, so on so forth.

Yes, replaced all filters with brand new ones.

Well, if you really don't want to talk to Sky the only suggestion that springs to mind is try another router. Do you have access to another one you could try.

Obviously you will need the username and password for the new one, but that shouldn't be a problem.

:)

As John says, if you've done all that it's almost certainly the router or a problem with the radius details.

We send out the same routers here, but I've not seen the sync light do anything like that for a very long time.

i believe that the router you are using is based on roughly the same Broadcom chipset as my Belkin F5D7633, which is just terrible for getting overly hot, and making the wall it is mounted on too hot to touch under heavy net usage.

id say the best thing to do is to just get a new router, preferably one with a newer, more energy-efficient chipset. either that or reflash it with a newer firmware, that might have some power-saving settings :?

Orange & green flashing indicates sync and attempting connection.
Usually caused by a billing issue.

That is exactly what I said.
But my dad has direct debit on his bills from Sky so they are always paid, on time and in full.

I called them up, and they said that they got the MAC addressed confused with someone else who didn't pay their bill.

So I told them that I wanted a new router. A direct replacment of this one. They don't support any other routers, so if something goes wrong with the new one, and they don't support it, they won't help. And it could even be a Sky problem with connection aswell.

So now because the MAC was disabled, we have to wait for another 2 weeks for it to come back on.

I was like, this is appauling.

And I WILL be writing to the head office about this, for some kind of compensation.

They can unsuspend an account in minutes if they want to.
I'd swap it for my own router anyway, just keep the old one and swap it if there's a problem

Yeah, but this IS SKY we're talking about.

My dad isn't the best with routers, but this one, he can semi-use. Can't teach an old dog tricks!

I'm with sky and as far as I know, you can't use a different router with their service due to not knowing the username and password. Ah you can, but it's a bit of a palaver.
