I've had my classic since it was launched about 2 years ago (ish) (09/2007).

I haven't plugged it into my mac for a while and it's on version 1.1.2.

I normally plug it into my Bose sound dock to charge the battery.

However, recently it has started kind of skipping. It's nothing like a CD skipping. It's as though it is pausing for a fraction of a second (very short blip) and then continuing. This can sometimes happen a couple of times in a track or sometimes it will "skip" all the time. It sounds a bit like dust on a vinyl record (if that makes sense).

Is there anything I can do to diagnose what is happening with this and fix it?

Thanks for any help.

Hmm. I'd be tempted to connect it to your Mac and restore it using iTunes as a first port of call.

Why not plug it in to your Mac and see if disk utility can find anything wrong with it?

Thanks both,

I will do that tonight.

Stupid question, do I have to back it up before doing a restore or will it just take everything off iTunes again once it's done?

Thanks again

I think that's the long and the short of it. It's how the whole iTunes/iPod ecosystem works.

Hope it's nothing too serious. If it turns out the HD is on the fritz there's plenty of stuff out there on repairing and replacing.

Right, it's been restored and is currently loading everything back on.

I did a verify disk thing in disk utility and it all showed OK.

I have a sneaking suspicion it could be to do with the fragmentation of data on the iPod. Not sure why though.

I guess the proof is in the listening.

I will let you all know how it goes... just gimme about 12 hours to get everything back on :D

Thanks again!
