Anyone done an HD swap in one of these before? I have a mate coming down in a couple of weeks to visit, and the weekend's plans include performing a 'simple' HD swap in his MBP. I've just ordered the HD and a spudger, I think I've got the screwdrivers, and I've had a good look at the ifixit.com guide. But has anyone got any gems of wisdom that might not be covered in the guide? |

If it's just a Core Duo and not a Core 2 Duo then I suspect you'll be needing a lot of patience and time. Mark |

An ice cube tray is useful, apparently, to store the various different screws that come out of the machine. |

That's genius! I've always made do with a cup/saucer/lid/plate/bag/whatever's about when dismantling a computer/model/thingamewhatsit. |

Whenever I have taken a Mac to bits in the past, I’ve printed out instructions and then taped the screws next on to the relevant step. |

Right, so yesterday we did the swap. My friend got the iFixit.com instruction sheet out next to the laptop, and followed the instructions. The only thing to go wrong was he attempted to lift the keyboard out, but had left one screw in. He stripped the thread off the screw hole, but everything else went just fine. So it's cost him one screw on the left of the body, but he's now got 5 times the storage. He also brought Snow Leopard down, and we stuck that on, did the OS updates, installed all of Logic (about 8 DVDs), and migrated everything off the old drive. Even after the migration, Snow Leopard does feel much faster than Leopard. I am impressed! |

The ifixit.com guides have a screw sheet that you print out and you put the screws in the spaces that are made for you, which is really handy. |
