HI,
for a while now, every time I start up Windows XP, I get asked to install Windows Genuine Advantage. There seems to be no way to tell this window never to show itself again.

I am running a genuine copy of Windows, but I have heard much badness about WGA just arbitrarily deciding that you are a Bad Person and stopping it working that I have resisted installing it. Is it just possible to stop this window from appearing, or should I just back up my virtual disk and install?

If you're running running genuine software then there's no harm in installing it.
I've never had a problem with it.

You need it for some non-critical updates as well.

I've installed it over 1,000 PCs over the years and I've yet to have a single one rejected...

I have installed the validation tool without any problems. I don't install the notifier which is the part that can mis-register your Windows as a pirate copy.

I think you can right-click on this update in the Windows Update screen and select "don't show me this again" from the menu. At least, in Vista.

There's no reason not to bother, but it does bug me in a way.
