Hi folks I have a client / friend with an office 2 macs and one pc the pc can open a file on an external hdd in 3-5 seconds ,both the macs take 41 seconds .
am i missing something they are all on a wired gigabit switch brand new ,they all see the ext hdd but opening things on the macs is soooo slooow .
any ideas how i can speed it up.
its a print shop and it takes too long to open clients data . :? :?

How is the external HDD connected? Via Ethernet, I presume?

Does it take the same amount of time to copy accross? If it's just the speed of the opening of the file, it could be down to the speed of the machines, but if it's the time to copy across, then it's something wrong with the networking.

takes longer to copy across and then open it /them
checked the cables in another location -work fine.
previously using wifi ,but now a tested¿ gigabit switch.
when the file is on the mac its faster to open not as fast as the pc but faster .

should i be thinking apple external drive so the macs work quicker ,the pc only needs to use the files for bills and such ,not the client data .
     ;)

If it needs to be written to by a Mac, would have to be FAT32.

Actually, I can't remember the rules any more! Either way, it wouldn't have mattered as it's over a network.
