The company I used to work for are switching their photostudio... From Mac to Windows! :(

The Admin is having problems getting the Macs to talk to the Samba server, the rights on the files get messed up when the Macs write to the folder, so he is replacing them all with Windows machines!

That's a bit extreme isn't it? I'm sure there is a solution out there.

For an Apple xenophobe sysadmin? OS X writing to Samba causing rights violations, when XP does it properly? It is a gift from the gods...

Why search for a solution, when you can replace all those horrible Apple machines with cheap Windows boxes? :?

Does this mean that XP isn't cheaper than OS X? ;)

No, that installing a new PC with XP pre-installed is easier than working out how to use BootCamp! :(

Have they factored in the cost of migrating to the new OS, buying in new software etc??

A company I used to work for had a mixture of Macs and PCs. The person in charge of getting backups running started complaining that the Macs were unable to be backed up because of the funny characters they used in their file names (you know, spaces and quotation marks). The thing is, we had hundreds of files with sensible names on the Macs, and to change them would be a major effort as many were interdependent. So I wrote an AppleScript that packed the necessary folders into a single compressed .dmg file and popped that in a folder for backing up. The backup issue just went away.

Is there not a way around this issue?

A new sys admin? ;)

AFAIK, they only use Capture 1 on them at the moment, plus a few web apps...

I would have thought using something like extremeZ-IP would be easier.

Wouldn't help, they are too cheap to use Windows servers, they have Linux servers running Samba, so the Windows PCs can store on them... But the Macs are messing up the rights, somehow.

I think the admin is just using as a great opportunity to get rid of the Apples... :?

hidden DS store files maybe causing the problem with the back up files for the Mac systems
try using onyx or tinker tool to disable DS files and the storing of DS files on the back ups and see if that helps …
