The next version of Ubuntu won't have the Gimp installed as part of the standard packages.

At the Ubuntu Develop Summit, they made the decision to drop The Gimp from the standard installation of Ubuntu. The program is simply too complicated and they will also win back a lot of space on the CD image - and F-Spot is already there to cover photo editing...

I'd like to see feature development on The Gimp frozen and for the developers to really work on the interface (and a proper Mac OS X native version :P ). The Gimp is simply far too confusing for simple edits. For simple things, it's just as good as PhotoShop/Fireworks, but it needs a simpler GUI.

Or you could take the view that by making a point of pointing out how I didn't point out the errors I was in fact pointing out the errors.

  :etc:

It took a couple of seconds to scan through (as a non-German reader/speaker) and realise that Dave had produced the translation, perhaps he did not indicate that it was the translation very well, but it doesn't need the whole thread to argue about the damn thing. People have complained about how the OP was structured, but damnit, what do you think of the news!?

Agreed.

That's one of the biggest killers for free software in general - the GUIs suck.

I think good riddance.

I've never used the gimp, but I've heard it's crap.

I really like it - it takes some getting used to but I don't find it any harder to use than Photoshop Elements 8. I often install it on my non-linux operating systems too. It's certainly a hell of a lot lighter than PSE and much much cheaper!
