Hi all,

I have a laptop here (not mine) and it's DVD drive appears not to work.
The laptop is a Packard Bell EasyNote, with an Intel Celeron M and 960MB RAM, running XP home.
The DVD drive is a [LIFTED] UJ-850D, it shows up with drivers in the device manager, and appears in My Computer, but when you put a CD/DVD in, it doesn't seem to know it's there. The disk appears to spin up, but then nothing...

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ben

Have you tried removing the drivers then restarting the laptop to see whether the OS detects new hardware? If it doesn’t then maybe the cable has come loose inside the lappy or the drive is dead. If it does then hopefully it may restart with freshly installed drivers?

Thanks for that, I'll try it when I'm home later :)
How do I uninstall drivers?

You should be able to double click the device in Device manager then click uninstall, (I think that's right, but this works laptop is locked down)

If that fails, this has worked for me before

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

This didn't work :( I uninstalled the driver and rebooted, it found the DVD drive, but didn't recognise the CD I put in it...

I couldn't see anything referring to UpperFilters of LowerFilters, and there were no Multi-String Vaules or data values...

I think I shall give it back to the bloke, I only got it to install some stuff on it. He can take it back to the place that reinstalled Windows and tell them it doesn't work...
