Post subject:  1TB Interal HDD, but which one?

Hi all,
I have now decided that I need a new HDD, my current one is only 320GB and apparently there is only 70GB of space left. I also want to make the leap to windows 7 in the next few weeks and so want to do the fresh install on a safter and new HDD (current one is a Hitachi Deskstar I think).

Now has anyone got any advice on which one to get? I need it to be quiet, reasonably priced (around £70) and not slow :)

Also, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how this adds up:
Running Treesize-
My total disk space is 298GB.
My used disk space on C:\ is 184,562.6MB (this may be a little off obviously).
My free space is 68.8GB.

I was thinking it would be 115GB..... so where does the nearly 50GB go?

The Samsung Spinpoints always got good write ups - you may or may not wish to see what's currently on the Dennis mags' A lists though ;)

i am the proud owner of a seagate barracuda 1TB, its fantastic, and i recommend it :)

but according to many review sites the samsung F3 is meant to be a little faster, and perhaps quieter.

I have all F1s from 400 to 1TB. All excellent and never had a problem. The F3 is the new model.

F3 is meant to have two 500GB platters as opposed to 3 333GB platters.

Which i've been told makes it better?

=/

But yeah they're very quiet, cheap and fast.

Less platters means great density. Because there is more gigs per platter it increases the speed of the drive relative to ones with more platters (according to benchmarks).

Yup the F3 is the drive of choice IMO

Looks like the Samsung Spinpoint will have to be the way to go. Though apparently it wont be delivered until the new year anyway... darn christmas.
