Right, I've got a new Mac. It's a Mini.

I've got an old Mac. It's a Book.

I'm assuming I can't pull the drive straight out of the Book and throw it in the Mini?

No, but if they both have a firewire port you can plug them together via firewire, start the book up in target disk mode (hold down 't' at boot IIRC) then sart the migration assistant app on the mini (which is in the 'utilities' folder inside 'applications') which will automatically copy data across from the 'book and put it in the appropriate place in the mini.

Both the laptop and the Mac mini use a 2.5" HDD, so swapping one out and replacing it with the other should be perfectly dooable, right?

It depends on whether OS-X installs all the drivers it could ever possibly need, or just those for its current hardware. I guess if you move from Intel to PPC or back then it'll fail as you'll run into all sorts of big-endian <-> little-endian issues. I guess it can't hurt to try, though!

Thanks for that Jon, but unfortunately the drive in the Mini is too small.

Well the hardware is very similar isn't it?

They've got the same graphics chipset, but I don't know about the other chips.

Well, coming from a PC background, I'd expect a BSOD. The OS would load up all the wrong drivers, but with the MacBook and Mini being so similar, I'm wondering whether it might be possible?

Also coming from a PC background, what's the worst that can happen?

1. Back up your stuff.
2. Swap the drives.
3. If it doesn't play nicely, re-install the OS from disc and restore your stuff.

Most important, let us know what happens. Preferably with pictures

Well, I'm posting this from my Mini. :D

It wasn't as tough to swap the drive as I thought it might be, with the Mini being so small.

The machine takes a looooooooooong time to boot though. I thought it would only be the first time that it was so slow, but it's been really slow all three times I've tried it.

Oh well - I'm going to go Snow Leopard tomorrow, so that will fix it (I'm going to do a fresh install rather than an upgrade).
