Post subject: | Remote Access Software |
Dear All, I am looking for a suitable way to access my mothers PC remotely to repair it when it all goes wrong. Basically she is now on Broadband and I would like to be able to remote into her PC when it all goes slightly wobbly. Ideally it would be free and simple to set up. I am guessing I am looking at some sort of VNC(?) but does the fact that neither of us has a designated IP address make this more complicated? Any help and or pointers very welcome. Thanks in advance AtB |

www.mesh.com Just don't make a sharing folder. Free and based on Live ID instead of IP so as long as the machine is on the net you can connect to it. |

The simplest option is Logmein. It's free and it works brilliantly, regardless of IP address or firewall. https://secure.logmein.com/US/products/free/ You could use VNC or RDP, but you'd need to set up her router for port forwarding and dynamic DNS first. |

Agree with JJw here as log-me-in is easy to use once you have set the account up and installed the software on her PC. |

http://www.gotoassist.com From Citrix, same as logmein, but allows you to look after other people's machines, as opposed to sharing your machine, or trying to explain how to set up a logmein account... You can get a 30 day free trial as well. |

Logmein Rescue allows you to access other people's machines by having them simply go to a website, which I imagine is very similar to what you describe? There's a free trial: https://secure.logmeinrescue.com/UK/Hel ... Trial.aspx The first thing I'd then do is install Logmein Free ![]() |

This. Use it at work to support our remote sites and at home for the folks as they just bought a new PC and have to get used to Windows 7 |

Cheers for the various suggestions. I went with LogMeIn and so far it all seems perfect. They have started me off on a free trial of the full programme so I can see how it goes and then decide if I need the extra options offered by the paid for version, or if the free version does all I need. Once again thanks to all ATB |

I keep wondering how long it is before they cripple the free version or do away with it. It must cost them a fortune in bandwidth, since most connections are NAT to NAT and need a proxy go-between. They do all this for free, and it's still pretty fast. It seems too good to be true, but it's been going for years! I use it every single day. Sometimes I have five different sessions open to different hosts in different tabs, and I can cut-and-paste between them. I still think that's cool. I can't actually think of a single time I thought, "darn - I could really do with the full version". That said, if you do - then go for it. You'll help keep it free for me ![]() |
