...you're updating a device driver in Vista, the machine has restarted but it's apparently stuck at Stage 1 of 3 ? "Do not turn off your computer." How long do I reasonably expect to have to wait before I reset against the best advice? Thanks. (Incidentally, the update finally managed to complete, but I'm still interested in how to work around it.) |

It depends on the device. I check there's no internet or hard-disk activity, wait 10 minutes and then kill it. |

Thanks Jim. We had made a restore point before we started, so hopefully it would have been relatively easy to get back in case of disaster. It's a USB-based amateur radio receiver and software. Best Beloved has just updated the USB drivers for it, which required the reboot. It took ages to install, with no real feedback, then seemed to stall after the restart. He's now managed to get it all working again, so he's reasonably happy. For now.

If it's done Vista updates at the same time it can take ages. I've had to wait for 20 mins before (although I could see HDD activity) |

... when you have to type a very long document on word ? I know (i think) how to use list to make a self updating table of contents. Does anyone know how to make list of quotes? Also my version of word is in french, does it translate automatically when I go to an English excel for things like "table of contents" titles that are self generated? I was tempted to type my dissertation in Latex, but wouldn't be able to get any help for it at uni so not a smart idea |

Insert table of ..... content will list headings etc and in the same area ( depending on version of word ) there are options to list quotes etc.
I would doubt it but unsure.
 not sure if you meant that.

I'm writing mine in LaTeX Just need a good book to help here and there, like when you want to draw diagrams...
