Q: How to batch rename jpegs with an overly complicated file naming protocol?

So I'm making slow but steady progress scanning all my photos, got the (supported) transfer media (SD) sorted and now I'm thinking of file management.

To date I've had folders:
<Period Start Date>-<Period End Date><House Name>
in which I've had files:
<Numerical Date : Year-Month-Day>_<###>

But because I'm doing this as much for myself as for my a friend, and since I've found this exercise quite theraupeatic, I want to go one step further with my cataloguing/indexxing.

I've been thinking how convenient the meta tagging of faces in Facebook is. I know it's nothing spectacular, but have I missed where the tool to do similar in ACDSee (9) or Photoshop (CS2) is?

If there's not, does anyone know of any freeware apps available that might?

Further, I'm thinking meta data in a file isn't enough, since it'll no doubt only be readable by some programs and so will still make filtering selections by file name or thumbnail a necessary chore in some programs (I'm thinking TVersity here)

So I would also like to "write" each photo's filename with it's meta data populating a field arrrangement of:
<Numerical Date : Year-Month-Day>_<###>_<Event Name>_<Main People / Scene in Shot>
much like you can do with programs like MP3Tag with .mp3 files.

I know it might all sound very anal, fussy and overkill but indulge me please.

Do you want an app to do it?

Could write a c# based console/winforms app if you want, good to keep the grey matter working and learn about new stuff (file properties, exif maybe etc)

I would have done dude but it took less time to find out how to do it in my copy of ACDsee 9 than it did to write the above post!

Still, if you can write an app that'll automatically figure out who is in which photo, and where that photo was taken, populate the exif fields, then edit the filename that'll save me a whole heap of time! ;) :P

Yeah I figured you would at least have the Exif done or at least some data already in :P

My only experience with exif's up until yesterday have been "my, isn't that clever how this exif thingy rotates pictures automatically" - how I didn't fathom pre-wiki that it was pretty much the same as an mp3s Id3 tag I don't know!
