But my IP address is a Birmingham one, I live three hours from Birmingham!

Yes, that is a bit of a flaw - quite a lot of ISPs register all their IP addresses with the physical location of their head offices, which is probably nowhere near their customers. if it's an iPhone/Android app, why isn't it just using the GPS service on those devices anyway?
