Sorry for teh unimaginative thread, but my contract's come up for renewal, and I'm after recomendations.

I'd love a whole server to play with, but that's just not feasible, unfortunately. I don't, at present, need too much storage or bandwidth - but we're after PHP/MySQL, preferably with SSH access. Being able to run SVN would be ideal, but I guess this won't be achievable for a reasonable price (ie. without getting my own server somewhere) :(

I use Dreamhost. It seems that they allow SVN...
They aren't the fastest servers in the world, or at least the load is very high, but for unlimited bandwidth and storage, I can overlook that.
They charge ~£5.50/month, or about £66 a year.

Thanks Heather! I'll look into them later. That's the sort of ballpark for price, Ben, so I'll look into them as well. I'm thinking of requirements as I go, but I have multiple domains I'd like to host. I've a feeling Ben's doing this, so dreamhosts will allow it.

I'm not, but I looked into it and it is possible.

I also have an account with ineedwebhosting for the Scouts site I administer. Their servers are a lot quicker, but I'm not sure what they do as I only needed a minimal service.

A number of people on Surrey LUG use bitfolk VPSes. Personally I'm with Server Centre (formerly Hosting Unlimited) and they're usually pretty good. The only downtime I've noticed was been when I forgot to pay the bill. :oops:

That's mostly because I know them personally and having the mobile number of the MD is always good if a problem needs sorting.

I use http://www.123-reg.co.uk for my small stuff never had any problems.

I use dreamhost and they're tech support too. Not had any problems with either.

They're not the fastest, but I think that considering what I pay them it's a very good speed.

I host ~10 domains with them and tend to munch up a fair few GB of traffic, and I'd imagine a fair bit of CPU time - lots of PHP.

Oh and I've got one domain I use just for SVN - it's excellent. That domain always seems quicker than the others - perhaps they use different servers for SVN.

The newsletters are cool too.

Should be able to get a years hosting from digital fusion for free as a uni student :)

After that it's £14 for a years hosting + .info domain included from the sister site.

I went with 000space.com for some free hosting, has sql stuff and PHP I think, not really played about with it, just bunged on a new free domain I got www.leakedmemory.co.cc (will get a .com when I can later... it's just to host my work on as an e-portfolio and just set off the wizard to make me a site :lol:

I use web-mania.com seems to do what it says on the tin.
