As nice as it would be this was rumoured last year. So may not happen. Feelings?

Maybe not free (though that would be nice) but I do think it's expensive for what you get. Maybe half the price would increase the numbers who take it up. It originally started out for free when it was called something else (iTools?) then started charging when it became .Mac, so who knows, maybe it'll become free again. I doubt it, but we can live in hope.

If the price was considerably lower that would be fine for me. It is very useful but if they want to attract a whole set of new customers to macs they need to be more imaginative.

An interesting development...?
MobileMe Disappears From Apple Online Store and Retail Locations
Quote:
It seems that Apple may already be preparing to make some major changes to MobileMe. They have removed the service from their stores; that is the online store as well as their retail locations. They are completely gone without a trace.

Guess they're either revamping the service or perhaps preparing to make it free? I won't hold my breath!

Know what? The fact that it's been removed from the online and high street stores (which apparently is the case)? Guess we'll find out soon enough, probably as part of the 2nd March announcement.

If it's made free, like it used to be once upon a time in the late 1990s, I suspect it'll be a basic set of stuff - up to five email addresses, small chunk of online storage, gallery stuff, synching and so on.

If you decide you need more storage or more email addresses, then you have to pay. Much as the scheme is now, except they'll waive the £60 fee for the basic setup.

That's if it's made free.

I'm not sure how useful most people would find MobileMe...

Many people have ad-free email that seamlessly integrates with their iDevice and Mac using GMail (which also offers webmail). If you have GMail then you have Google Calendars, it's a little tricky but you can sync that between your Mac and iDevice. You can do the same with your address book with Google, but when I sync my iPhone (at least once a day), my Mac and iPhone Address Book is the same anyway...
Facebook shares my photos and Dropbox shares my files.
Find my iPhone is free anyway.

While this is a number of different services and not all of them are simple to set up, they have been free for the last four years (or so) while MobileMe hasn't. I'd have thought people would be reluctant to shift to a a different environment when they have already established a way of working with others.

Just another way of looking at what you say, Ben.
I use my iDisk for personal file sharing. It also hosts my personal website (as out of date as that may be). I sync my bookmarks across several computers, I also love the simplicity of the @mac.com edress I have.
A reduction in price would be great, but if it means a reduction in how I can use the service then I'll keep it as it is, thankyouverymuch.

Well I have received an email for its renewal at £59 at the end of the month so maybe not.
