Post subject: | win7 64 bit can't see NAS |
This my first post here. By the look of some of the user names, this is a forum of freedom fighters who have broken free from the tyranny of the old PC Pro/Computer Buyer/Shopper forum I am the proud owner of a new laptop Dell Studio 15. I am a win 7 newbie so please can you help with an issue I have? I have 3 other laptops all running XP. On any of those I can map a network drive to my NAS at \\nas\public with no problems at all. In Win 7, because the credentials on the nas server are not the same as on the win 7 PC, I am choosing the option to login with different credentials. I know the nas credentials I am using are correct, becuase I use them on the XP machines. But every time I try this in win 7 it reports that the device name or credentials are incorrect and asks me to check my spelling. Knowing my inablity two type proppurly (did you see what I did there?) I have checked that carefully. But still nothing. Nada. Rien. I think this may be a classic case of the error message being wrong. All suggestions gratefully received |

Can you see the NAS from a browser using just its IP address? |

You are spot on there. This is not going to help you but when I went win7 64bit the only thing I had a problem with was my NAS box and have never got it properly working with it. ![]() |

Actually I have no idea! I had two mirrored drives in a Maxtor Touch enclosure that went snafu (just after warranty expired - typical). A local PC shop got me a generic NAS enclosure and mounted the drives in it for me. Since it worked perfectly I never gave the lack of a brand name a thought |

Well since I posted in the 'other place' first and got no responses i am happy to join this happy band of brothers (and sisters) As to your comment about your NAS box - oh dear. This win 7 PC is my main one and the one that I was lookimg forward to backing up to the NAS to protect my thousands of pics so I could access tem from elsewhere. |

Welcome aboard then ![]()
Interestingly my NAS was a one touch as well. I've resorted to manually backing up to it weekly as it insists I "test" it before backup will work. In all fairness the site does state it won't work with win 7 64 bit. ![]() |

just a thought that maybe way off mark doesn't Win7 use a different type of NTFS which may not be able to read/see the XP NTFS partitioned backup again, just a thought … |

Please tell me Microsoft have not made Win 7 backwards incompatible. So whatever happens, I am unable to mic Win XP and Win 7 PCs on the network and access a NAS from all? |

well as I can share and access drives between my mixed win 7 ultimate ( 64 bit ) and xp pro ( 32 bit ) machines all using NTFS that cannot be the case. ![]() |

I would guess that as it's a NAS box it'd be running linux so would format in ext2 or ext3 Can you create a user on the NAS box with the same password as your Windows 7 PC (or turn off users altogether on the NAS box for now and have full access to everyone) |

I had a look at the registry hack. But as you said when you posted it, that was for Vista, and Win 7 has no reg file entry of that name. ![]() This is infuriating. I can see the IP address of the NAS. I can ping it. If I open the Network area of Explorer it can see the volume. If I richt click on the volume name it will even bring up properties such as MAC addrss. Grrr..... Well, I bought it from a local PC shop. Maybe I will let them sort it. |
