Well I've been on the same Plusnet package for a while now without really thinking about it. £15 for 2gb at 8mbps. Today I looked online and saw that they're selling 10gb at 8mbps for £6 per month. Obviously I upgrade my account. But I wonder how many other customers have been left on rip off packages without being upgraded automatically. If they'd upgraded me to 10Gb and still charged me £15 I doubt I'd have even noticed. If you use Plusnet, check your account now, you could save a fortune. |

The same is true of everything. Don't just renew every year, no matter what it is. Always look around for the best deal. That goes for phone contracts, insurance, utilities, internet, loans and savings. Take savings accounts for example. Banks introduce new types of account and slowly reduce the interest on the old ones, but most people wouldn't notice. |

One thing you might not be aware of is that recently PlusNet changed their products, new customers have to agree to an 18-month contract and existing customers who choose to upgrade to the new products are then on a new 12-month contract. That's why they aren't automatically upgraded. At the moment, existing customers on legacy products are on a rolling 1-month contract, so are effectively free to leave at one month's notice - if you've signed up for one of the new products and choose to leave before the 12-months' contact is up, you will have to pay the remaining contract off (potentially over £100, depending on the length of contract remaining). After the 12-months (or 18 months for new customers), they revert to a rolling 1-month contract again. When PlusNet brought these products in, there was uproar on the PlusNet forums as initially existing customers who were upgrading had to agree to an 18-month contract, but they relented a bit and dropped it to 12-months after many existing customers vented their fury on the forums! It's still 18-months for new customers though. I'm still on one of the old products, which are actually much better than the current products - the new ones are severely throttled in peak times (more so than the older products), and they don't have some of the older products' features such as web space, domain hosting, static IP addresses etc. That's why I'm sticking on the legacy product. I won't agree to a 12-month contract, and I need my .co.uk domain hosting too, which I'd lose if I "upgraded". If I didn't have the hassle of my domain being hosted with PlusNet for an extra £1 a month, I'd switch to another ISP. At the moment, I pay £15.99 a month for an 8Mb connection (up to 4Gb allowance a month) with my .co.uk domain hosted and automatically renewed, which isn't exactly cheap, but the new products have too many disadvantages for me to consider. If I was a new customer, there's no way I would sign up for an 18-month contract - not in this economic climate, who knows what the future holds? I agree, PlusNet used to be a great ISP, they were genuinely different to the mainstream ISPs and had customer service at the top of its priorities. Sadly, since BT bought them out, standards have dropped and they're trying to compete with the likes of Tiscali with headline-grabbing "features" at low prices - dig a little and you'll see that they aren't very good products. Just check out the disclaimers on the cheapo £5.99 a month, which by the way is only available on certain exchanges - if yours isn't one of those exchanges, the price rises to £11.99 a month - not such a great price then. |
