Hi, I'm looking for a small ATX case to use for a linux firewall. All it will have is... a small HSF (Arctic alpine pro) CLICKY! an additional PCI NIC (possibly more in the future) and one full size HDD I need a new PSU also so PSU size isn't too important as I can buy to fit the new box. I'm looking for something as small as poss that will fit an ATX mobo. Something that looks like a DVD player or something would be ideal. Budget is as cheap as possible. I can buy a midi tower for £15 so something around that would be good. Thanks Oliver |

LOL, just been doing some electricity calculations. If I was to swap out the HDD of my router for a CF card and use the 80% PSU I linked then the Linux router running for 24hours would use about the same amount of electricity as my kettle would in 40 minutes. LOL! |

This is why I've decided to go for one of these: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167153 The processor only draws 4W, and I imagine the rest of the set up is pretty low power too given the 65W PSU. I'll measure the idle and peak currents when I get it next week, but I'm guessing it would be about 10 minutes of kettle per day. That's about £30 a year, so it'll pay for itself compared to running my old Athlon. And thus, my beloved Barton 2500 is finally retired *sob* |

If that had an extra ethernet port it would be the ideal kind of thing that I'm looking for. ![]() Looks good though. Good to see the Atom is getting use in places other than mobile phones. I just realised though that the loudest thing in my PC at the moment is the HDD. Even the tacky cheapo PSU is virtually silent compared to the HDD. I may have to invest in a CF card and IDE adapter to get this working properly. It'll be my project for the next month or two I think ![]() |

Yes, that's the only problem. If I'm going to use it as a firewall, then I might be stuck with a USB ADSL modem. Not ideal! Mines going to be playing HD video though, thanks to that ION chipset ![]() |

Yeah, I noticed that. It seems remarkably over powered for it's size and cost. It would give my old gaming PC (the one I'm converting to a router) a run for it's money. |
