Post subject:  AD users in different locations

I have a curious problem.

I have a directory on our DC/file server, which is set up with a bunch of groups which can read and write to the them.

I have users on the site where the DC is and users on remote sites, which have a SDC locally and use a VPN WAN connection to see the DC.

Users at our local location can read and write to the folders. Users, in the same access group, can see the files, but they can't write files into the directory, even though the rights say they can - Windows says that the directory is read only.

Only thing I can think of is how are the trusts set up ? e.g. is it a two way read write trust. Reason for asking is got caught with Main to satellite working fine but satellite to main was read only.

Thanks, I've done a quick Google and found a technet article... I'll see where that leads me.

Grr, turns out that they were using a "share" on the folder. There is a "General" share, which the people at base use and I was using at base and there is a direct "Project" share, which those on the remote site use, because they don't usually have access to the whole drive.

Although the directories had the correct rights assigned for each group, the Share was set to "everyone, read only"!

So, although the user had rights to see write to the directory, the share was restricting them to reading them only.
