Post subject:  Mobile (satellite) Broadband??

Hi all,

My ridiculous task of the day today  is to sort out a price and options for getting 'truly' mobile internet.

It's to go in a mobile exhibition trailer, driven all round UK & Ireland, and specs need to be thus:

Truly mobile (that means 3G is out, if it won't work everywhere) - so, satellite?
Broadband speeds
Only needed for maybe 4 months.

I've been looking at stuff like this:

http://www.ethnetuk.com/index.php?pageid=8

Which looks to be the ticket, but it has a setup and install cost of £5,790. :o

Can anyone think of a cheaper option? If I present that to my boss I'll be wiping laugh spittle off my face for the rest of the day. :D

I don't think

What speeds do you need?

Are you sure that a hi-gain directional 3G antenna bolted onto the top of the trailer isn't going to work?

It might not give you a very fast connection in a lot of locations - but it should get you something.

That might be an option - AFAIK the trailer will be visiting schools, so I doubt it'll be going so far from civilisation that it can't get some sort of signal. The problem is, it needs to support anything up to 15 workstations, so I'm imagining that would reduce a 3G connection to a crawl.

As for speeds, they specified 'broadband speeds'. Technically, 512k is broadband speed, and if they have any hopes of streaming HD movies in the middle of a Welsh valley, then they've got a steep learning curve ahead! You can get 2Mb connections on satellite, but it's seriously expensive.

Still, you get what you pay for - if they really want decent BB from anywhere, they'll have to go with the satellite option! :D

Well it will only be land line in some valleys because of the "shadow" of the valley sides they can#t even get satellite

More or less.

The best deal I've found is here:

The Oyster option seems a helluva lot cheaper than the rest, and looks to do the job.

We've passed all the prices to the client (still only quoting ATM), and they didn't bat an eyelid. :? It's a government sponsored initiative, so I guess paying over £1k/month for basic BB access seems fine to them. Nice to see our tax money being used wisely.

If this job goes ahead, I'll let you know how it works out.
